The Porsche Cayenne was the factory’s first foray into the large 4×4 market in 2003. This was done in conjunction with VW (Toureg) and Audi (Q7) where all 3 models shared a common platform, but they all had a different take on the powerplant and performance. Originally appearing to mixed reviews due to its looks. nobody could argue about the performance and handling of such a big car, and the later model of the Cayenne is highly regarded all round. The author can confirm the prowess of this car (having owned one) although the MPG can be a little intimidating! Although many 4×4 models have taken a pounding with insurance, our Porsche insurance will look favourably at these vehicles, especially with some experience of driving in the past.

Porsche Cayenne S

As with the later Cayman, the Cayenne S was the first model to hit production in 2003. Powered by a 4.5 litre V8 engine producing 340bhp, this was enough to give it a 0-60 time in only 7 seconds – remarkable at the time for a vehicle of this size. The current generation of Cayenne S has had engine power increased to 410bhp and the car is some 250kgs lighter. The Cayenne engines are now shared with the Panamera and are remarkable for the power and efficiency they now produce.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo

With a 450bhp V8 turbo engine giving a low 5 second 0-60 time, the Cayenne Turbo was a revelation when it came out. The staggering power and speed was matched by the staggering fuel consumption which demanded very big pockets! A 520bhp Turbo S model was also supplied which was designed to compete with AMG and could compete with the fastest performance car around. The new generation Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S now have 500 and 550 bhp respectively and are just the best 4×4 performance cars on the market today. The speed and handling are superb without losing the vital comfort that owners of these cars expect.

Porsche Cayenne GTS

For those wanting a sportier version of the standard S model, Porsche introduced the Cayenne GTS. Lighter, lower, and with an aerodynamic kit, the GTS sits neatly between the S and Turbo versions.

Porsche Cayenne

Although Porsche is renowned for its performance models, they have also produced basic models of the Cayenne following a large demand. The standard car now comes with a 3.6 litre V6 engine which has a healthy 290bhp and is more than enough for the type of motoring it is designed for. More surprisingly has been the extremely popular VW sourced V6 Diesel model that was offered from 2009. There is a large market for people who want the fuel efficiency and torque of the diesel and want to remain in (or start in) the Porsche brand.

The future will no doubt be the hybrid technology that Porsche are investing very heavily into, but we know that this will still be at the specialist end of the car market, and one we are very happy to continue to provide performance car insurance for. Please do call and speak to someone who has a large knowledge of these vehicles.
