The mid-engine Ferrari 488 was launched in 2015 as an update to the 458 and is powered by a 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Despite being smaller in capacity than the 458’s engine, it produces more power because of its use of a turbo. The 488 GTB was named “The Supercar of the Year 2015” by Top Gear Magazine.
Did you know that the car’s name came from: 488 cc per cylinder (8 x 488cc = 3904cc)? This V8 engine produces 661 hp at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. Ferrari claimed figures for the 488 GTB are 0–62 mph in 3.0 seconds, 0–124 mph in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph.
The body changes on the 488 have been designed to increase down force over that of the 458, while at the same time, producing less drag.
The 488 model years ran between 2015 and 2020 and has been succeeded by the F8 Tributo.
Model Variants
The Ferrari 488 Spider version is a two-seat convertible with a folding hardtop using the same engine as the GTB and was only 50 kg heavier than its relative.
The Ferrari 488 Pista (track in Italian) was unveiled in 2018. As the name suggests, this version had considerable modifications over the standard 488 GTB to enable its track performance. The engine was extensively reworked with different camshafts, pistons and other parts so that it now produced 710 hp and 770 Nm of torque. When in “Race mode”, the dual-clutch transmission will make changes in 30 milliseconds.
The exterior changes for the Pista included a new front end which helped to create more down force at high-speeds and all the changes combined helped the Pista to generate 20% more down force than the standard version.
The modifications combined permitted the 488 Pista to accelerate from 0–62 mph in 2.85 seconds, 0–124 mph in 7.6 seconds and have a top speed of 211 mph, according to Ferrari.
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider was a convertible variant of the 488 Pista which had the same level of performance as the coupé.
