The Impreza WRX

The impreza WRX is a turbocharged version of the standard car of which the vast majority are imports from Japan. The performance status of the WRX is confirmed by its stiffer and higher quality suspension, wider arches, lower profile tyres, uprated brakes, etc. As with the Imprezas arch rival, the Lancer Evo, there are so many different versions of this car as to make the list too long to note down.

Subaru Impreza WRX GC

The original GC chassis was made from 1992 – 2000, with the original car being supplied with 240bhp, a huge amount in its day. This was gradually increased to 280bhp where it officially stayed under a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in Japan. In reality this was exceeded by both Subaru and Mitsubishi, but they never admitted to it. Born out of its extremely successful rally campaign, the main common link was the superb flat 4 boxer engine which has proved to be extremely tunable, and the all wheeled drive.

So many of these cars have had some sort of modification that the Subaru insurance schemes we have automatically take this into account. We are well aware of all the different types of work done and would be happy to discuss this with you.

Subaru Impreza WRX GD

The GD chassis was produced from 2001 – 2007 and went through specs A to G in that time. The biggest difference was a 120% increase in the chassis stiffness and changes to the exterior, especially the lights. The Bug Eye, Blob Eye and Hawk Eye models were all produced during this period and each has its own following.

There is a healthy debate amongst owners as to whether the GC or GD model is ‘best’. Whilst the latter has a much more rigid chassis this was at the cost of about 200kgs in weight. We will sit on the fence!

Subaru Impreza WRX GE/GH

2008 saw the GE/GH chassis which was effectively a complete body reshape. Some say that car has lost its hardcore edge, but despite all new safety regulations, Subaru managed to keep the cars weight to virtually that of the GD, some 1425kgs. With a 2.5 litre engine producing 265bhp, the newer WRX still keep the old Subaru traditions alive.

Imported Impreza WRX Insurance

We understand the majority of impreza WRXs are imports from Japan. Thankfully, we have specialist insurance schemes designed exclusively for Japanese Import owners.
