Aston Martins first SUV in its 106-year history is called the DBX. For those of you who may not know the marques heritage, the initials DB belong to David Brown who defined the original DB classics.

The DBX was officially unveiled in November 2019, it is a luxury five-seat 4×4, SUV which is powered by a 542bhp 4.0 litre V8 sourced from Mercedes AMG. UK prices start at £158,000 before specifying any options and the first deliveries of the DBX are scheduled for spring 2020. At the time of writing Aston say that they have over 1,800 advance orders for the DBX. This is already a competitive sector which includes such vehicles as the Urus, Bentayga, Range Rover SVR, Cullinan, Cayenne Turbo, RS Q8, Levante and X5 M50 to name just a few.

While related to the Vantage and some of the styling traits come from the DB11 such as the large grill, the DBX is built on its own new platform. As well as the engine, the infotainment also comes from Mercedes-Benz. The DBX weighs 2,245kg yet it is not lacking in pace, it can accelerate 0–62 mph in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 181 mph

The DBX has a 9-speed automatic gearbox with six driving modes and five ride heights to choose from which allow up to 95mm of suspension adjustment. Few owners of luxury SUV’s will take them off-road, but Aston has assured DBX customers that the vehicle is capable of doing so. The DBX’s 4×4 system is both electronic and automatic, directing power to each wheel as required and it has an electronic limited slip rear differential, adaptive dampers and air springs.

In terms of its physical presence, the DBX at 5.04m in length is shorter than the Bentayga at 5.14m but slightly longer than the Cayenne at 4.92m. The thing that Aston have highlighted is its height which according to them is “low and sporty” for a SUV as the DBX is 70mm lower than the Bentayga and, 20mm lower than the Cayenne.
