Do I need to exchange my Portuguese driving licence for a UK one? 

No, not immediately. Your EU-issued Portuguese licence remains valid for UK driving for up to 12 months. 

If you’re planning to settle in the UK permanently or stay for more than 12 months, you’ll need to apply for a UK driving licence through GOV.UK and submit the required documents: 

• D1 application form 
• Passport, travel document or identity card (returned to you) 
• Passport-sized colour photograph 
• Portuguese driving licence (not returned) 
• Application fee

Can I use my Portuguese no claims bonus in the UK? 

Yes. If you’ve built up a foreign no claims bonus record in Portugal, known locally as a Declaração de Sinistralidade, there’s no reason it should count for nothing in the UK. Portugal is one of the countries whose no claims history Keith Michaels accepts, provided the certificate is translated into English and is generally no more than two to three years old.

Can I insure a car I’ve imported from Portugal? 

Yes. Once your vehicle has approval and DVLA registration, Keith Michaels can arrange specialist import cover for it. 

What documents do I need if I have no UK insurance history? 

A valid licence, details of your car, and honest disclosure of any convictions or claims from Portugal. 

Can a family member or partner be added to my policy? 

Yes, named drivers can usually be added. Naming someone else as the main driver to reduce costs, known as fronting, is illegal and could void your cover.
