Moving to the UK comes with plenty to organise, but your car insurance doesn’t need to be one of them. With Keith Michaels, UAE drivers can arrange cover quickly and easily, making it simple to travel on the road with confidence.

Relocating from UAE to the UK? You need Keith Michaels expat car insurance

With 35+ years’ experience, we help expats secure the right car insurance when moving to the UK. From driving on the left to learning new speed limits, there are key differences in road rules, driving habits and insurance requirements that can take some getting used to.

Whether you’re relocating permanently or visiting for work, you’ll need valid expat car insurance to drive legally in the UK. As in UAE, having access to a car is often an important part of everyday life, making the right insurance cover an essential part of your move.

No History of Car Insurance in the UK? No Problem

All you need is a valid driving licence, along with clear details of any previous driving convictions or accidents in UAE, plus information about the car you want to insure. We’ll also ask a few additional questions to help us understand your circumstances and assess risk accurately.

Unlike many mainstream insurers who may charge higher premiums or even decline cover, specialist expat providers like Keith Michaels take a more tailored approach to meet your specific needs.

We look at each case individually to find a policy that offers fair cover and peace of mind while you’re driving in the UK. We also accept foreign no-claims bonus (NCB) to keep premiums as low as possible.

We Also Provide Import Car Insurance for Your UAE Vehicle

Moving to a new country can take some adjustment, so having something familiar with you, like your own car, can make the transition feel much easier.

At Keith Michaels, we’ve been arranging import car insurance for decades, building strong relationships within the import industry and developing specialist expertise along the way.

Often referred to as parallel imports, UAE vehicles are often similar in specification to UK models. However, many standard insurers are hesitant to cover them, viewing imported vehicles as higher risk. Not us.

At Keith Michaels, we aim to find the right import insurance policy that provides robust protection and works best for you.

Car Insurance for UAE Drivers in the UK FAQs

You probably have lots to ask about car insurance for UAE drivers in the UK. Here’s a selection of the most frequently asked questions.

Do UAE Drivers Need a UK Licence?

If you’re moving to the UK permanently or planning a stay of more than 12 months, you’ll need to exchange your UAE driving licence for a British one. You can continue to drive on a valid UAE licence for up to 12 months after arrival, but once that period ends, you’ll need to apply for a British licence.

Thanks to a licence exchange agreement between the UK and UAE, there’s no need to sit a driving test. Instead, you simply apply through GOV.UK and submit the required documents. These typically include a completed D1 application form, a passport or other identity documents (which will be returned), a passport-style photo, your current UAE driving licence, plus the applicable fee.

What Happens to My UAE No Claims Discount?

If you’ve built up a strong no claims discount with your UAE insurer, there’s no need to worry about losing it when you move to the UK. We’re one of the few UK insurers that recognises international no claims bonuses, so your driving history can still count in your favour.

To make sure it’s applied, you’ll just need to provide proof of your no claims bonus, and our team will review your details to confirm how it can be used on your policy. We’ll guide you through the process to make things as simple as possible.

You can also add an additional driver to your policy temporarily without it affecting your no claims bonus, giving you extra flexibility when you need it.

Are any UAE Cars Banned in the UK?

No specific UAE cars are banned from being driven in the UK. Instead, all vehicles must meet strict safety and roadworthiness standards before they can be used on UK roads.

If you’re importing a car from UAE, it will usually need to pass an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test before it can be registered and driven. This checks that the vehicle meets UK safety requirements. Any issues such as modifications or security features will need to be corrected before it can be retested.

Once on UK roads, the same basic rules apply to all drivers: your vehicle must be safe, with working lights, clean windows and mirrors, and no defects that could affect visibility or road safety. If issues are found, police can issue a defect notice requiring you to fix the problem, usually within 14 days, and provide evidence of repair.

What Changes Do I Need to Make to My UAE Car Before Importing it to the UK?

In most cases, you don’t need to make any modifications to your car before it leaves UAE. In fact, making changes too early could potentially affect your insurance or create issues if those modifications don’t meet UK regulations.

Any adjustments, such as tinted windows or aftermarket exhausts, must comply with UK road safety standards, so it’s usually best to wait until the vehicle arrives before making any changes.

Once your car is in the UK, there are a few important steps to follow. Within 14 days, you’ll need to notify HMRC and pay any applicable VAT or import duty, and your vehicle may also require an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test. At the same time, you must inform the DVLA so your registration can be processed and number plates issued. The full process can take up to six weeks, after which you’ll simply fit your new plates, and your car will be ready for UK roads.

Can I Import a Modified Car from UAE?

Yes! At Keith Michaels, we specialise in import car insurance and tailor cover to suit your individual needs. This can include everything from track day insurance through to more specific requirements you may have for your vehicle.

We also provide insurance for a wide range of specialist cars, including supercar insurancemodified car insurancecompany cars and more. Whatever your circumstances, we work hard to find the right level of cover to match your situation.

What Else Do I Need to Safely Drive in the UK?

If you’re arriving from UAE with a full driving licence, there are a few key steps to complete before you can legally get behind the wheel in the UK:

  • Hold a full, valid UAE driving licence
  • Arrange insurance with a specialist expat car insurance provider with the required expertise
  • Ensure the vehicle meets UK roadworthiness standards. If you’re buying a car in the UK, this usually means a valid MOT certificate for vehicles over three years old. If you’re importing a vehicle, it may instead require an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test.

Once you have a suitable car, you’ll also need to register it in your name, ensure it is properly insured (declaring any previous convictions or claims from UAE), and pay the relevant road tax. After these steps are complete, you’ll be fully legal and ready to drive on UK roads.

Can I Add Family Members to My Expat Car Insurance Policy?

If you’d like to add a family member as a named driver, it’s important to declare this when setting up your policy. Depending on their age, experience and driving history, it can sometimes affect the overall cost of your insurance, either increasing or reducing the premium.

Even if it’s not always the most cost-effective option, it’s worth discussing with your insurer to see what’s possible for your situation. For visiting family members, temporary cover may also be available, particularly for shorter stays. We work with Tempcover to help arrange short-term insurance policies, provided the driver holds a valid licence.
