Japan’s big boys have teamed up – to work on their latest idea, and it is going to be a new high performance coupe. Subaru and Toyota have ‘Toyobaru’ joint venture waiting in the wings. A rumour from Japan’s resources – they are currently planning a STi version of Subaru’s half of the Toyobaru project.

The official Subaru artwork was leaked last week. The ‘Subarota’ was penned for reader’s delight by a Japanese magazine, Holiday Auto. Although Subaru have yet to confirm what specs will be for this new project, the accompanying story is based on informed guesswork, insider tips or speculation.

As reported from Japan, Subaru’s EJ20 boxer engine with direct injection, six-speed Aisin gearbox and a rear axle taken from the Lexus IS250 parts bin all will be used on the standard Subarota. They are also claiming that its power will be in the region of 200hp, which is more than what they originally planned for the entry-level Toyobaru version. Along with a wider track and a raft of suspension upgrades, which would improve the driving performance, a hot STi version of the Subarota will be equipped with Subaru’s EJ25 2.5 litre engine which will push out closer to 250hp.
