Rolls-Royce – A History

Rolls-Royce has been providing the ultimate in motor vehicle luxury since 1904. 2011 marked the centenary of the Spirit of Ecstasy, the world-famous emblem on the front of all Rolls-Royce cars. Rolls-Royce has produced a vast range of models during their 100+ year history, from the early Phantom I, Silver Ghost and Silver Wraith, to today’s Rolls SUV, the Cullinan.

Every car has the mark of genuine build quality, and the opulent interiors that are expected from drivers of such a distinguished vehicle. Throughout the early 20th century with Silver Dawn, Phantom II & III, Silver Cloud, and into the 40s and 50s with the Silver Shadow and Silver Spirit, the manufacturer has produced cars with the smoothest drive, and a grace unknown to any other make of car.

A Guide to Rolls-Royce – FAQs

Who owns Rolls-Royce?

Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW, who have had control since 2003. In 1998, there were complex negotiations between VW, BMW and Rolls-Royce PLC, during which VW eventually let BMW have the Rolls-Royce trademark and automobile models. BMW acquired Rolls-Royce for just £40 million – less than a month after Volkswagen bought Rolls-Royce from Vickers for £479 million.

How much is a Rolls-Royce?

This is entirely dependent on the model, however, most modern Rolls-Royces are available for around £240k to £300k, with the Phantom at around £400k.

Why are Rolls-Royces expensive?

Rolls-Royce produce hand-crafted cars, available with virtually unlimited optional extras, upgrades, customisations and a colour palette of 44,000+ colours. The cars are tailored to their customers’ exact specification. Inside, the cars are fitted with 300lbs of acoustic insulation, as well as special Continental foam filled tyres to minimise the sound of the road. One standout feature is the cars’ bespoke starlight headliners which are designed to replicate the night sky (or a constellation of your choice if you so wish).

Can anyone buy a Rolls-Royce?

Yes, if you have the budget for a Rolls-Royce, anyone can purchase one.
