The Mitsubishi FTO is a front engined, front wheeled drive car produced by Mitsubishi from 1994 to 2000 exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. Such has been the demand for these cars that many were exported to the UK during a period of large 2nd hand imports by dealers. Second hand cars in Japan were all graded according to their condition and many excellent examples still survive here. Eventually the demand was so great that Mitsubishi UK actually supplied a few cars as new.
As with many Japanese market cars there were many different versions made with the vast majority being produced in 1994 and 1995. Over 36,000 FTOs were made with a large number coming to the UK.
The original FTO GS came with a 125bhp 4 cylinder engine, with the desirable GR (170bhp) and GPX (200bhp) made with a 2 litre V6 motor. The latter Mivec engine is highly regarded and has proved to be a reliable power plant.
