Launched in 2006, the Porsche Cayman is a 2 seat mid engined, rear wheeled drive coupe derived from the 2nd generation Boxster. For those who have driven it, many claim it to on a par with the famous Porsche 911 and would have the ability to better it if Porsche decided to use all their engineering prowess. Porsche Cayman insurance has been part of our Porsche insurance range since it first appeared, whether they be in the standard, S, or R models. The wonderful lines of the Cayman were heavily influenced by the original Porsche 550 and 904 models which were 2 of the prettiest cars ever made.

Porsche Cayman

Surprisingly this was the 2nd Cayman model to be produced as the S version came to market slightly earlier in 2006. Powered by a flat 6, 2.7 litre engine, the original car had 245 bhp which was then increased to 265 with an upgrade in 2009. With a 5 speed manual gearbox (PDK in 2009 available) the car was quick enough to hit 60mph in 5.5 seconds – a creditable time for any performance car.

Porsche Cayman S

The original Cayman model, the S version had a larger flat 6 engine that displaced 3.4 litres. With originally 295 bhp which increased to 320 in 2009, the Cayman S is a very potent car and able to lap tracks at a pace that puts a huge pressure on the flagship 911. With a 6 speed gearbox this car accelerates to 60 in under 5 seconds, and with the addition of a limited slip differential, is an extremely capable sports car. In privateer hands at race events, the Cayman has embarrassed many a 911 and beaten them easily, something that Porsche themselves try to play down. Porsche have no plans to install the turbo engine in this car as this will undoubtedly take away 911 sales.

Porsche Cayman S Sport, Porsche Cayman R

As is the norm with Porsche, a couple of limited edition Cayman’s have been produced up to now – the 300+bhp Sport in 2008, and the 330bhp R in 2011. Both these models are stripped down versions of the standard car. The S Sport had a production run of only 700 cars and was the base for the Cayman R. With the use of lightweight components that save over 50kgs and the increased engine power, this car with the PDK box can hit 60mph in under 4.5 seconds which really does put it into supercar territory. A 175 mph top speed means this is a car for the experienced driver only.

Although originally based on the Boxster, the Cayman has always been given a more powerful engine and is the real 2 seats performance car of the Porsche range. It now stands on its own and is a car we are keen to provide performance car insurance for. Please do call and speak to one of our experts who share an enthusiasm for cars.Porsche Cayman Specs
