Peugeot 208 GTi is go

The famous GTi is back, this time in 208 form. Production will commence next year following on from the successful showing of the Peugeot 208 GTi concept at the Geneva Show recently.

Under the bonnet will be the same 1.6 litre turbocharged engine as used in the Mini and Citroen DS3. 2 versions of the car are likely to be produced – the first with a 155bhp engine, and the second with 204bhp on tap, likely to be tagged as ‘GTi Racing’.

In recent years, Peugeot has lost out on its GTi reputation, with that moniker now largely passed on to Renault with their range of hot Clio and Megane models. Hopefully this new Hot Hatch will return Peugeot back to their old roots when they made arguably the greatest ever hot hatch car in the 205 GTi (Golf GTi owners will strenuously disagree though).

The answer at this stage will probably only be a maybe as we doubt Peugeot will want to take on the might of the sports Renaults. Hopefully the new 208 GTi will be an improvement on the somewhat warm 207 GTi which was only really a improvement on the standard car.

Should you own anything like the cars above then we would be happy to cater for them using our Hot Hatch insurance and Performance car insurance schemes. Please do call us to speak to a specialist.
