BMW 1-Series Gets the New Turbo Engine

Announced at the Detroit motor show last week, BMW will add the new TwinPower twin-scroll turbo engine and DCT gearbox to its 1-series range this year.

The current twin-turbo unit in the 1-series will be replaced with the new single-turbo straight-six. Like the old engine, the new one will produce 302bhp but there won't be any more power for the 135i Coupe. As we revealed late last year, BMW's M division boss, Kay Segler, is very keen to make an M version of the 1-series as early as 2011.

BMW's 7-speed DCT twin-clutch gearbox can be offered as an option for the N55-powered 135i models.
